I love Mary Roach--where else can one find a humorous, talented writer with boundless enthusiasm and such deep curiosity about off-beat subjects? Roach tackles space travel and all the little things we don't think about; how to go to the bathroom in zero G, what happens in space when you can't bathe and what 15 G's will do to the average person. Roach gives us a glimpse into the training that NASA astronauts must undergo, takes us on a ride on the "Vomit Comet" and also discusses all the of the different experiments that astronauts and the devices they operate must endure. We also find out about fist fights in space (on MIR), why the Japanese astronauts in training have to create 1000 origamis (which are then analyzied by psychologists for signs of stress, etc.)and how a Gemini astronaut smuggled a corned beef sandwich on one mission among other "tasty" tidbits.As usual, Roach jumps in and floats through all the material with her characteristic wry insight into human nature. Is space some place humans should be? Probably not but as Roach herself would probably point out--that's precisely why we're going there."Packing for Mars" is as entertaining as Roach's previous books "Stiff", "Spook" and "Bonk" which looked at what happens to us when we die, if there's an after life (and if there is what all the fuss is about) and...sex and our ambivalent relationship with each one of these sujects. A great and breezy read you should pack this one with all of your other reading this year.

I read this book after reading "The Martin", now a blockbuster movie, and am glad I read the Science behind the Fiction other authors use to make Mars sound awesome and dangerous. This author has a practical, tongue-in-cheek but factual and very funny style of writing that I really enjoyed. She did a lot of painstaking research for her book, extensive travel, and probably had to listen to thousands of hours of NASA transcripts and interview notes to get a few gut-bustingly funny precious gems. Totally worth it. I recommend this book to all my science-geek, and non-science friends who are interested in what it really might be like to get to Mars alive. Is being an astronaut really work all the trouble? Either way, a very funny and interesting read.

Roach strips away the glamor and heroics to offer us a look at the grittier, and messier, aspects of space travel as it relates to the human body. It's all here: food, sex, personal hygiene, motion sickness, claustrophobia, physiological changes, defecation. While we may snicker at some, these are aspects of the human condition which are glossed over as we defiantly insist that we will conquer other worlds. Fortunately, scientists the world over are not ignoring these aspects. It's just that they don't make for good PR. Roach presents them here.But the best part is Roach herself. Her wit and unabashed curiosity are in plain sight, boldly going where decorum and press releases dare not go. There's just enough science here to give the layman an idea of what's going on--and presenting it in clear terms--without overwhelming him with forensic detail. She interviews astronauts and scientists, historians and charlatans, and when research isn't enough, she bravely participates in experiments (flying aboard a C-9, drinking recycled urine). Despite being confronted with the unpleasant facts of space travel, Roach doesn't flinch. She satisfies our curiosity while satisfying her own.

I love reading Mary Roach. Whether its dead bodies, ghost research, liquid diets for astronauts, or what food makes the best crunch, Roach expertly tells the story and explains science in an amusing and easy to understand way.Space travel has always fascinated me and the idea of moving to Mars permanently, so I was especially excited about this book.I love this book - but if she decided to write about mouse droppings, car parts, or the history of nails, I would grab those books too.

Because I am a twelve year old boy when it comes to all things NASA I tend to read anything that has to do with space travel. This book about the practical logistics of space travel to the Red Planet came up, and hearing about Mary and her book on cadavers I bought it. What followed was tenacious and through investigation of what will be needed to leave earth for years at. However what also followed was an amazingly funny, gross, "can't believe she went there" tale that is worth reading just for the notes asides. Thank you Mary. I will be reading and or listing to all your books... While doing it every one is going to think I am a little off in the coffee shop I sit in as I laugh so hard I snot.

The book is both interesting and disgusting. Roach has a penchant for the gross and macabre aspects of life. This is an author who wrote entire books on digestion and corpses. You won’t hear much about rocket propulsion or space navigation, but the zero-G toilet is covered in excruciating detail. Many pages are devoted to topics such as feces and vomiting.Roach certainly did her homework - she snags a ride on the “vomit comet” to experience zero-G first hand, and travels to remote outposts to see how astronauts might live on Mars. The book is carefully researched, and she frequently peppers the text with amusing footnotes and details she discovered along the way. It’s a good read if you’re not squeamish.A note about the audio edition: Roach is a talented public speaker, so it's really unfortunate she doesn’t read her own book. The “narrator’s” harsh, school-marm voice unfortunately drains much of the humor and wit from Roach’s text. I also wish the audio book came packaged on an MP3 disk. I had to manually rip and copy onto one myself, because "stop to change the disk" doesn't work while you're driving.

Introduction

As a born-and-bred Londoner, I feel something of a patriotic affinity for gin. Although the Dutch can rightly lay claim to having created the first popular juniper-flavoured spirit, what is unquestionable is that the modern style of gin mostly enjoyed around the world today has English origins, in London to be specific. And what a journey it has had -- a veritable rollercoaster ride over three centuries.

When gin first hit the capital, it was popular with the masses but shunned by the gentry. Over the years, it struggled to find acceptance by the upper classes, but by the days of the British Raj, polite society had properly accepted and adopted it into its noble ranks, peaking in the 1930s cocktail era.

During the dying decades of the 20th century, gin then suffered in the fashion stakes as vodka's star shone ever more brightly, but the turn of the millennium seems to have heralded a new enthusiasm for gin once again. Today, gin might be considered the most fashionable and dynamic spirit category of the moment.

Despite my patriotic affinity for the spirit, I also feel sad that the term 'London Dry Gin' is not protected by an appellation and can be adopted by gins made all over the world. It also pains me that precious little gin is now produced in our great capital.

This book is a celebration of gin, and I hope that it helps gather support for the idea of creating a protected appellation that finally acknowledges the city's role in today's drinking culture and affords it the recognition it deserves. Just as the 'New Western Dry' category articulates a trend for New World gins, so the London-born old-school tradition of gin-making should now be properly protected.

Ok I am beginning to not trust Amazon reviews... How do 74% of people rate this 5 stars?!?! This book is beyond boring and basically repeats the pareto principle over and over and over again.... How many different ways can you say it? Well that's what this book does.Seriously, this could have been a short magazine article. The author provides very few examples outside of the obvious ones as to how to he applied this principle in his own life. Not to mention, some of his examples are extreme suggesting that you can ignore 100% of your emails and inferring they are a complete waste of time. How useful and realistic is that?Very disappointing and I feel mislead by these past reviews.

I've been using the 80/20 principle for several years to engage in higher productivity and streamline my actions for the day. It is definitely a principle that you need if you are running a business or engaged in team management. I am glad to see there is now a book on the topic. This is a great book! It explains how typically we put 80% of our time, energy, effort in a way that only gives a 20% return. Doesn't make sense whichever way you look at it. Damon explains the principle of the 80/20 rule and how it can literally change your life. Imagine putting in a 20% effort and getting an 80% result! Sounds too good to be true - but it's not. This book shows how to apply this simple principle in all areas of life - it's not just about being more productive, or running your business better; it is about getting the most out of life: at home, in relationships, in leisure pursuits. The book is straight forward and easy to read. Damon writes in a down to earth, friendly style. He is not lecturing. He is not talking down. He does not use complicated ideas. He is like a friend telling another friend where to find the treasure he has discovered. I really appreciated the practical suggestions and the open invitation to try things out. Although the title is not catchy, it truly represents the content presented. How do I regularly find myself in the weeds of details and never achieve anything or feeling satisfied? I have yet to live the 80/20 way. I have been following the 80/20 way for over a month now and I can honestly say that it has simplified my life and I actually get more done! The book is a very quick read, like most text from this author. Give it a try!

About the Author
Nancy A. Hewitt (Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania) is Professor of History and of Women’s and Gender Studies at Rutgers University. Her publications include Southern Discomfort: Women’s Activism in Tampa, Florida, 1880s-1920s, for which she received the Julia Cherry Spruill Prize from the Southern Association of Women Historians, Women’s Activism and Social Change: Rochester, New York, 1822-1872, and the edited volume No Permanent Waves: Recasting Histories of U.S. Feminism. She is currently working on a biography of the nineteenth-century radical activist Amy Post and a book that recasts the U.S. woman suffrage movement.

Steven F. Lawson (Ph.D., Columbia University) is Professor Emeritus of History at Rutgers University. His research interests include U.S. politics since 1945 and the history of the civil rights movement, with a particular focus on black politics and the interplay between civil rights and political culture in the mid-twentieth century. He is the author of many works including Running for Freedom: Civil Rights and Black Politics in America since 1941, Black Ballots: Voting Rights in the South, 1944-1969, and In Pursuit of Power: Southern Blacks and Electoral Politics, 1965-1982.

So, I have to just give credit for how much I love the work itself, BUT this was not wrapped in plastic or anything. I mean, is this supposed to be wrapped or no? The book came as is - as a book. The cover was bent and there is a small mark on the spine. The pages inside were completely fine and untouched, but the cover looks otherwise. (The cover is plastic by the way.) I find it difficult to say that this was not delivered in the best quality. All I am wondering now is can I get a replacement?.. I highly suggest covering these books with a plastic to ensure better travel handling. I hope I can get a replacement though because I want to have this book last for as long as I'm alive. (Yeah, it means that much to me.) Anyway, even for those who don't know this artist, this is a great book to buy to study a professional's style and methods from an observational perspective.Aside from all my pickiness, I have to admit to myself that it arrived perfectly on time and is overall perfect. The bends in the cover may be because it may have been in a store or sitting on a shelf where others could browse through it perhaps. I am really happy I got this.Hopefully now that you've read my frustrations of minor details that you won't be as nit-picky as me 😅.

This book of illustrations is absolutely wonderful! It's not large in frame which I find makes it more convenient to haul around. I was so excited when I saw Kushinov's book on the market. I have been one of his patrons on patreon and this book reminds me of why I supported his work in the first place - it captures emotion in such an exquisite manner.

The book is very insightful in where the artist had gotten his inspiration from and I am very happy with this purchase.------------------------------~Original Review~I've been following Kuvshinov's work on Instagram for a while now and have been eyeing this book for a good amount of time. He truly does inspire me and makes me want to strive to keep improving my art everyday so I finally caved in and bought this book in order to be able to study his art a little more closely than I would be able to through a screen. So when it finally arrived I was immediately frustrated with Amazon, the book came visibly scratched and used. I had ordered the book brand new and to see it be in such poor condition is a big letdown.Overall I'd give the contents of this book 5/5 stars hands down better than I expected but I have to sadly give the condition of the product that I received 1/5 stars.

A big fan of the artist, his illustrations are detailed and presented in a way that makes each one feel as important as the one before. Included are mostly portrait illustrations but there are a fair number of urban landscape pieces included as well. Ilya also includes process images for certain pieces that show his methods for completing his artwork which are very insightful.I do wish that at least some of his pieces included his thought process to give us greater insight into how he accomplishes his works. Titles would also have been nice in order to view more sources of his work.Overall, I'm very satisfied with the purchase and look forward to using it as a source or reference/inspiration

I bought this as a gift for somebody for Christmas and they absolutely loved it. It came in perfect condition and the illustrations inside were amazing. Although I did see reviews state it was ruined or flimsy upon arrival I did not have any problems with mine. This is a purchase you won’t regret.

I cant stress how amazing the images are in this book. My only complaints are the sleeve. Its very slippery and gets in the way. I have no idea why they just didn't produce a better sleeve. But if you remove the sleeve the under cover is rally styled and cool on its own. Its also note worthy the outside is a thin cardboard. So its very flimsy on the outside. Everything else is great though. I like to look through it when listening to music or just to look at the beautifully stylized work.

Ilya Kuvshinov is still a rising artist, in terms of popularity, but damn, he's already a master in terms of artistry (is that a word?). This book is a proof of his amazing talent, and his even more amazing sense of fusion between japanese pop-art influences, modern framing and classical portrait tradition.Also, i have to take note of the excellence of the book itself. The editing, the composition, the quality of paper, of printing... The artbook is just a damn beautiful object. It could be twice the price it is, it still wouldn't be a steal.I'm in love with it.

I ordered this because I've followed the artist for quite a while on social media and his works never cease to amaze me. Definitely worth every penny to be able to just sit down and look at all of these amazing pieces of art!
